Chapter 15: The Stronghold of Baltyr
Boy prowled through the underbrush, his ears perked, their attention caught as he moved forward cautiously.
The scent of numerous creatures filled his nostrils, their presence thick in the air. It made his fur bristle involuntarily.
Something was happening- something unlike anything he had encountered before. He inhaled deeply, his mind racing as he tried to process what this could mean.
Beasts didn't gather like this- not in such numbers and certainly not without conflict. In the time that he had spent in Aegaryn, he knew one truth: beasts did not gather without any signs of a fight. They fought, they clawed, they killed for power...
And yet, something was breaking that fundamental rule... He had to find out.
Then he saw it...
A line of beasts, stretching through the dense forest, all moving with silent purpose.
Boy's eyes narrowed at the sight, confusion and intrigue visible in his eyes.
Normally, summons fought viciously over the right to be summoned and even when meeting in the wild, would seldom gather or even be this peaceful with each other.
Yet here they were- waiting in an orderly line, each creature standing with an eerie patience, marching slowly towards an unknown destination.
Some moved with confidence, their massive frames radiating dominance, while some others kept their heads low, as if expecting an attack to come at any moment...@@@@
However, after a few seconds, no attack came. No battle broke up. Whatever force controlled them, it was stronger than their instincts.
'What in the world are they going to do?' he pondered with increased curiosity.
Keeping to the shadows, he observed carefully. Some were massive, hulking figures while others were smaller, nimble creatures with sharp claws and sleek fur. Their sheer variety was unlike anything he had encountered before.
The line moved forward, weaving through the trees, their pacing unchanging. He trailed alongside them, curiosity and caution warring within him as while he had seen many things in his time here, never had he seen creatures acting with such restraint.
The silence between them was unsettling as even the creatures that seemed irritated or aggressive held themselves back.
No growl of dominance, no territorial displays, just quiet determination. And all of them were heading in the same direction.
It was then, through the dense trees, he saw it.
A massive fortress loomed ahead.
It had towering stone walls etched with glowing runes, pulsating like a living entity. It was ancient, yet undeniably powerful, exuding an aura of command that made even the most aggressive of beasts tread cautiously.
Seeing the animals making their way into the structure, Boy instinctively understood that this was no ordinary gathering place.
And then he saw him.
A massive figure stood at the heart of the stronghold- not human, but not fully beast either, but something in-between. A creature wreathed in raw power.
Unlike the other creatures, this one stood upright on its hind legs, exuding a presence unlike anything Boy had encountered before.
The creature stood nearly twice his height, its body was draped in a thick, dark pelt that shimmered with an almost spectral quality.
Sharp, curved claws tipped its long fingers, and its canine-like muzzle bore a set of gleaming fangs.
But what stood out most were its eyes- golden and piercing, as if it could see straight into Boy's soul.
Then, a voice spoke, not aloud, but inside his mind.
"You. Step forward."
Boy froze. His body stiffened, his mind reeled.
Telepathy...
This creature could speak directly into his mind.
The other beasts instinctively backed away, forming an invisible circle around him that no creature wanted to enter.
Hearing this, Boy's claws flexed as his head began to run into overdrive.
Am I in danger?
"You are different..." the voice continued, calm yet laced with intrigue, "You do not belong among them... You have something rare..."
Boy stared at the beast cautiously as he answered, "And what would that be?"
The creature smirked as it answered, "You have intelligence."
This struck Boy like a bolt of lightning. It was not his strength that made him stand out here, instead, it was his mind?
This was something that he had never heard before.
The towing beast motioned toward the stronghold's entrance, "Join us. Prove your worth, and you may claim power beyond what you know."
Boy hesitated... The time that he had spent here in Aegaryn had always been about one thing only- survival. But now, standing before him was something greater than himself, and it offered an opportunity to him.
He took a step forward, considering the offer as he replied, "I'm listening."
