Chapter 1994 Recapture of Shaoxing
Chapter 1994 Recapture of Shaoxing
The Japanese army in Shaoxing failed to reinforce the transport team, and then reinforced the Japanese army that was blocking the 1st Regiment at the pass.
The first and second battalions of the first regiment were already close to the pass and were preparing to occupy the pass position.
The Japanese troops from Shaoxing arrived and reinforced the firepower at the pass, holding the first and second battalions firmly at the foot of the hill.
At this time, the soldiers of the Second Regiment broke through the Japanese army's defense line on the Xiaoshao Highway, and the soldiers of the Third Regiment broke through the defense line of the Qianqing Railway Bridge.
The brigade commander of the 12th Brigade ordered the 2nd Regiment to launch an attack on Shaoxing. The 3rd Regiment detoured through the Dongshushan Pass in Xiaoshan to cut off the Japanese army's retreat.
The Japanese captain was greatly alarmed to find his retreat cut off. He immediately ordered the main force of the Japanese army in Shaoxing to block the attack of the Third Regiment.
Taking advantage of the Japanese army being attacked from both sides, the regimental commander launched another fierce attack on the Dongshu Mountain Pass.
The fierce battle continued until after 8 p.m., when the First Regiment finally broke through the Dongshu Mountain Pass and joined forces with the Third Regiment to attack the Japanese army from both sides.
The battle continued until dawn the next day, when all the Japanese troops defending the Dongshu Mountain Pass and the Japanese reinforcements from Shaoxing were annihilated.
The soldiers of the Third Regiment and the First Regiment continued their eastward advance and surrounded Shaoxing.
After three days of fierce fighting, Shaoxing, another important city in central Zhejiang, was also recaptured by the 12th Brigade of the First Army.
At this time, the First Squadron and the Third Squadron of the First Naval Battalion of the First Army encountered Japanese naval forces that were roaming around Jiangxin Island and Daxiaomen Island in Wenzhou.
After a fierce battle, the First Squadron of the First Army Navy easily eliminated the remaining Japanese naval forces in Zhejiang.
Thus, the 32nd Provisional Division of the 88th Army of the Taizhou Government Army, the Zhejiang East Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Column in Sanmen County, and the 10th Army Group of the Wenzhou Government Army no longer encountered attacks from the Japanese Navy at sea.
The likelihood of the Japanese army launching a land attack on them was also decreasing, as the First Anti-Japanese Army was gradually recapturing the territory occupied by the Japanese.
After the 12th Brigade recaptured Shaoxing, the Japanese troops in Shaoxing retreated to the outskirts of the city, Keqiao, Doumen, and Dongguan, and built a group of bunkers in an attempt to continue controlling the Xiaoshao Canal and the Shaosheng Highway.
They also set up watchtowers in the core area of Chengguan Town to control the Shaosheng Highway and the Cao'e River waterway.
This is a vital pass between Shaoxing and Shengxian, guarding the transition zone between mountains and plains, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack.
The First Army Air Force launched a fierce bombing raid on the Japanese fortifications in Chengguan Town.
Taking advantage of the destruction of Japanese fortifications and the disruption of their battle plans, the regiment captured Chengguan Town in one fell swoop, breaking the triangular defense of the Japanese forces at Chengguan, Changle, and Ganlin.
They then continued their attack along the Shengxin Highway, capturing the stronghold of Changle Town and controlling the branch line leading to Dongyang.
Meanwhile, the 2nd Regiment of the 12th Brigade launched an attack on the Xinchangjiang Bridge in Xinchang County, broke through the Japanese blockade, and controlled the Shengxin Highway and the Xintian (Tai) Ancient Road.
The Xintian (Tai) Ancient Road is a gateway to the mountains, with treacherous terrain and narrow, winding roads. The Japanese army could block the road to Taizhou with a small force.
Unexpectedly, the Second Regiment's assault team took an unconventional route, scaling the cliffs and launching a surprise attack on the Japanese guard.
A small Japanese platoon and a company of puppet troops stationed along the ancient road were attacked by the fierce firepower of the Second Regiment's assault team and could not withstand the attack in less than half an hour.
Soon after, Xinchang County was recaptured. The road to Taizhou was reopened.
Meanwhile, the Third Regiment was attacking Shangyu County, located northeast of Shaoxing.
The straight-line distance between Shaoxing County and Shangyu County is about 30 kilometers, and they are connected by the important Shaoxing-Shengzhou Highway.
It was by relying on this highway and the Cao'e River waterway that the Japanese army constructed a troop movement and supply route from Shaoxing to Shangyu.
