Chapter 76: Going Over To Natasha’s House

Chapter 76: Going Over To Natasha’s House

The days that followed Alaric’s intense training passed in a blur, each one marked by the steady rhythm of life at the Steele Mansion. The servants moved seamlessly through the vast halls, performing their duties with practiced ease. The soft clink of dishes and the murmurs of conversation filled the air as the mansion hummed with the sounds of everyday life. The smell of freshly baked bread wafted from the kitchens, blending with the savory scent of roasting meats and the subtle fragrance of polished wood and fresh flowers that adorned the marble halls.

Alaric spent most of his days in his private study, surrounded by scrolls, tomes, and countless parchments. The tall windows of the room let in a steady stream of sunlight, casting long shadows across the polished wooden floor. The flickering light of the setting sun seemed to magnify the stillness of the room, the only sounds being the faint rustle of parchment and the rhythmic scratch of his quill as he worked through the documents spread out before him.

His mind was focused on the matters at hand—reports, correspondence, and the constant demands of his family’s estate. It was the kind of work that demanded his attention, though not his passion. He couldn’t help but lose himself in the minutiae of it all, occasionally taking a moment to gaze out the window, contemplating the world beyond the walls of the mansion.

He was deep into a report about the latest political developments in the Capital when a soft knock at the door interrupted his thoughts.

"Enter," Alaric called, not looking up from his papers.@@@@

The door creaked open, and the familiar figure of one of his maids appeared in the doorway. Her name was Linnea, a quiet, efficient girl who had been with the family for several years. She stepped inside with the grace of someone who had long been accustomed to Alaric’s presence.

"Master Alaric," she said, her voice soft yet respectful, "there’s a letter for you. It’s from Lady Natasha."

Alaric’s interest piqued at the mention of Natasha’s name. He set his quill down, pushing the documents aside. Natasha, a dear friend from his time at Verdant Dawn Academy, had always kept in touch with him. He’d grown fond of her over the years, though their relationship had never evolved beyond friendship. Still, the idea of hearing from her always brought a sense of anticipation.

Linnea handed him the letter, and Alaric noticed the familiar, elegant handwriting on the front. He broke the wax seal with a flick of his fingers and unfolded the parchment. His eyes skimmed over the words, and as he read, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips.

"Dear Alaric," the letter began, "I hope this letter finds you well. I wanted to inform you that I will be returning to my family’s house in Rakhshan Town for a short while. It has been some time since I last saw my sister, Iridelle, and I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for us to catch up. I would be delighted if you could join me. We could reminisce about our academy days and perhaps even enjoy some of the local attractions. I know you have been busy with your responsibilities, but I hope you can find the time for a brief respite. Your presence would make the visit all the more enjoyable."

Alaric paused for a moment, reading the last few lines again, savoring the idea of spending time with Natasha. He couldn’t deny that it had been a while since he’d had the chance to relax and enjoy himself. With his responsibilities weighing on him, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to take a brief break from the unrelenting pace of his daily life.

He continued reading, "Sincerely, Natasha."

A slow smile spread across his face as he lowered the letter. Natasha’s invitation was a welcome distraction, and more than that, it would give him a chance to visit her family’s estate. He had heard much about Iridelle, Natasha’s older sister, a woman whose talents in artifact creation had earned her a reputation among the most skilled in the land. While Alaric had met Iridelle a few times over the years, their encounters had been brief and formal. He was eager to change that, especially considering her skills and the fascinating potential for collaboration.

As the maid departed, Alaric’s thoughts turned to the journey ahead. A two-day trip to Rakhshan Town sounded like the perfect escape, though he had a few things he needed to arrange before leaving. His mind wandered briefly to the matter of the four women who were currently staying at the mansion—Evanthe, Elin, Zoey, and Sigrid. They had proven useful in more ways than one, but their usefulness wasn’t the sole reason he intended to bring them along on this trip. They would serve as reminders, tokens of his control. He had ensured that each of them knew their place under his authority, but this journey would allow him to solidify that control.

Alaric moved to his private chambers, where Kara, his personal maid, was already there, preparing his belongings for the trip. Kara was a striking woman with dark, braided hair and sharp features. She had been in his service for years, and there was a certain unspoken understanding between them. Kara knew her place and never overstepped her boundaries, a fact that made her indispensable to Alaric.

As he entered the room, Kara turned, her soft, submissive gaze meeting his. "Master Alaric," she greeted him in a voice that was almost a whisper, her head bowing slightly as she placed the last of his garments into a neatly packed trunk.

It wasn’t lost on Alaric how quickly their defiance had melted away. These women had once been full of resistance, and yet here they were, molded into the roles he had designed for them. It amused him, and a part of him couldn’t deny the small sense of triumph he felt as they quietly accepted their fate.

As the sun began to dip on the second day of their journey, the carriage rolled into Rakhshan Town. The familiar sights of cobblestone streets and bustling markets greeted them, but Alaric’s attention was entirely focused on what lay ahead—Natasha’s family home. The carriage rolled smoothly down the narrow streets, eventually coming to a stop in front of a quaint little house with a small garden at the front. Despite its modest size, the house exuded a certain charm, the kind that made it seem more inviting than many of the grand estates Alaric was used to.

As Alaric stepped out of the carriage, he was greeted by the sight of Natasha waiting for him. Her crimson hair fluttered slightly in the breeze, and her warm smile made her presence even more striking. There was no mistaking the affection in her eyes as she stepped forward to embrace him.

"Alaric! It’s been too long!" Natasha exclaimed, her voice bubbling with excitement. "I’m so glad you could make it. Come, come, let me introduce you to my sister."

Iridelle, Natasha’s older sister, stepped forward as well, her presence carrying an air of quiet dignity. Her long blue hair cascaded down her back, and her purple eyes gleamed with a sharp intelligence. She was every bit the refined lady, her posture perfect as she greeted Alaric with a respectful bow.

"Young Master Alaric, welcome to our humble abode," she said, her voice smooth and calm. "It’s an honor to have you here."

Alaric gave a polite nod, but his eyes couldn’t help but flicker to the four women following behind him. Iridelle’s gaze briefly settled on them as well, her expression unreadable, though there was a flicker of surprise as she noticed the number of attendants.

"Please, come inside," Iridelle invited, her gesture ushering them toward the house. Alaric followed Natasha inside, his curiosity piqued by what he might find in this unexpected place.

Natasha led him eagerly through the rooms, her energy contagious. "This is my room," she said proudly, opening a door to reveal a cozy space filled with books, trinkets, and a large workbench covered in tools. "And here’s my workshop," she continued, ushering him toward a separate room, where an array of artifacts and half-finished projects lay scattered across the tables.

Alaric’s eyes widened as he took in the impressive collection. Beautifully crafted weapons, delicate jewelry, and intricate trinkets of all kinds lay on display. Natasha beamed at him, obviously thrilled to show him her work.

"These are incredible, Natasha," Alaric said, picking up a dagger with a finely wrought hilt. "Your skills have truly blossomed since our time at the academy."

She grinned, clearly pleased by the compliment. "Thank you! But, if you think those are impressive, wait until you see some of the things I’ve been working on. Some of my creations have... well, let’s just say they have their own set of problems."

Alaric raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Problems?"

"Yes," Natasha said with a small sigh. "Some of my designs are a bit too ambitious. Take this piece, for example." She gestured to a beautiful necklace on the table which had a rather complicated enchantment attached to it. "It’s supposed to be a source of protective magic, but every time I try to activate it, it fluctuates wildly. It’s like it’s reacting to something in the air, but I can’t figure out what."

Alaric examined the necklace carefully, running his fingers over the smooth surface. "I see what you mean. The design is flawless and the enchantment is quite complex. I will need to study it properly to give any input on it"

Natasha’s eyes lit up as she said to him, "If you want, we can do it now. I am really curious and want to resolve the issue in this necklace because if I resolve it, it can become a good protective amulet."
