Chapter 291: Charging Through an Ambush

Chapter 291: Charging Through an Ambush

MooseSince they had left that planet and set off in search of the dungeon where the jesters took William. The Moose had heard a voice in the back of his head. It wasn't a very loud voice, and he had trouble understanding exactly what it was saying. So at first, the moose thought ignoring it was the correct move.

The people had talked a lot about whispered voices and how dangerous they could be. So he had taken that to heart, had done his best to push it out of his thoughts. Which, considering how complex his thoughts were, was still brand new to him, that wasn't overly hard to do.

He put most of his focus into some of his favorite things, like eating and walking around invisibly. Somehow, none of the other people ever seemed to notice him. He was pretty sure he wasn't that quiet, but then again, his weird talent had worked pretty well so far. He had also seen a notification that he couldn't fully understand as he walked through the halls one day.

Mana Orb Rank Increase

He was pretty sure a mana orb was that thing he had eaten once. It hadn't tasted great, but it smelled delicious. It also let him make those weird, funny shields, so he had decided long ago that it had been for the best. Sometimes he considered eating another one, but his stomach always growled against the idea, so he hadn't yet given in.

The voice in the back of his head grew more distinct as they neared their destination. And as everyone was starting to scurry about the ship, preparing to depart, he finally understood the words it was saying to him.

“Take me into battle. Together, we can be unstoppable. Free me from these shackles.”

Now, he wasn't a dumb moose, and he knew that you shouldn't trust voices that said things like this, especially when all the people around him seemed to have no idea about it. But at the same time, the voice didn't strike him as malevolent. It sounded almost desperate for help.

And that was how the Moose found himself in Alex's room while the rest of them were watching the ship dock with the dungeon. There were stacks of things she had brought with her at the last minute before they had left Earth, and one of them was an incredibly large sword. One that was somehow talking to him.

“You've come. Then you've heard my pleas?” the voice that had been in his head these last days asked.

The Moose was not great at conversing yet, so instead he bowed his head, hoping that would confirm the answer to the question.

“I understand if you are hesitant to trust me, but I am not your enemy. I was stolen from my true master by a horde of orcs invading their world. I do not know if they ever truly understood what they had found in me. You are the first being that I believe has heard my cries. I ask you, please take me with you. I sense in you something similar to my old master.”

The moose looked over the sword carefully. It was that same huge sword that the orc had wielded against Dave when the moose had first seen him. And while he still wasn't sure he believed the voice entirely, it had been a powerful blade, and right now, any help they had towards rescuing William was worth the risk.

So, with that in mind, the moose leaned down and touched the sword. Something formed between the two of them as he did that. A connection grew that hadn't been there before, and the sword vanished from the room.

The Moose focused on making the sword reappear, and it did just that. It looked exactly the same as it had before. He focused again, this time trying to recall it, and it vanished again.

“Thank you,” the voice said, its distress finally gone.

It was that same voice that had alerted him to both the fake illusionary wall and all the invisible creatures that stood between them and that tower. It was also that voice that encouraged him to make his charge.

“I can feel the child, the same connection you have. He's somewhere in there. Go now, before they have time to plan to stop us,” it said, and the moose listened.

He charged forward, slamming his antlers at the jesters, forcing them down below his hooves, where he trampled their forms. This time, he was invading their home, and the Moose would give them no mercy. They had taken his friend. It was time to take him back.

Yorela

She had a feeling the jesters had known the moment they stepped into the dungeon. There were just far too many of them here otherwise. That likely meant that the initial attack was them testing how strong their pursuers were.

The only good news she saw in this was that it looked like they had somehow sprung the trap much earlier than the jesters had expected. That damn moose was like a tank crashing through them, and they didn't seem to have any clue how to stop him. The others were here after her call, already joining the fight.

Now, if only she could ignore the growing voices in the back of her head whispering about the disasters of her last voyage, she might be able to help them in this fight.

A dozen smaller versions of Mel flew by her, each of them carrying a halberd. Beside her, Maud was already working her magic, and the two cats had joined the Moose in its charge. And yet her brain had frozen her.

She was trying as hard as she could to connect her thoughts to actions. It didn't matter that the last time she had been in a life-or-death fight in chaotic space, almost everyone had died. This wasn't the same thing. She knew that, and she had to fight.

Her friend's child was counting on her.

And then the first counter-attack by the jesters hit them. A horrific screeching cackle ripped through all of them. Even the moose had halted in its charge at the strength of it.

All of those horrible whispers intensified in her brain. And that meant everyone else was hearing them all the same. Everyone else had frozen around her, the same as she had, unable to fight back.

That was the final bit of motivation her brain needed to push her out of this crisis. Her own life hadn't been enough, but those of everyone around her? She wouldn't let that happen again.

“Keep fighting, you idiots!” Yorela screamed as she triggered several of her own abilities. She may not have been a Bard exactly, but a Knowledge Enforcer came with a few things that could work at a pinch.

Path of the Educational Martinet {1.0E4/1.0E4 Experience}-Pay Attention! {1.0E7/1.0E7 Experience} Pay Attention!\Nails on a Chalkboard {5.0E8/5.0E8 Experience} Pay Attention!\Hands Up {1.0E9/1.0E9 Experience}

The Moose and the cats were the first to spring back into action, but only beating Mel by fractions of a second. This time, Yorela was right behind the Cloudform. Her giant axe gripped firmly in her hands, as one of the jesters appeared in front of her.

She cleaved it directly in two, letting loose a primal scream of rage as both halves slumped to the ground. She knew that in no world was she over the horrible fear gripping her brain, but right now a bigger fear had taken hold.

She would not lose more of her friends.

“Don't stop to engage them. Keep going until we're at the tower's entrance. We have no idea how many of them there are, and we need to hold our momentum before they can truly mount a defense!” she yelled as she pushed forward.

The jesters had already started to pull back from their assault. She knew they were regrouping for a different kind of attack, and she had no intention of giving them a chance to unleash it. If they could get inside that tower, they'd have to fight them in the corridors instead of risking any sort of giant destruction.

“Y’all heard Yorela! Get yer asses moving!” Mel screamed as he pushed forward, flying in the wake of the moose's carnage.

A dozen halberds appeared around him, surrounding his form as his drones broke formation, chasing down the jesters. Every time one of them caught a group, it detonated, further increasing the chaos of the jester retreat.

As well as this, Yorela was still worried. It was possible this was a trap inside of a trap, and they had missed it. But there was no turning back now. She knew she couldn't drag Alex away from that tower, and she wasn't even sure she wanted to.

The moose was the first one to crash against the doors on the side of it. Doors that were much easier to see, now that her own abilities were working to fight against the weird, mesmerizing effects the jesters had cast over this space. She had been right that some of what the tower had shown them was an illusion, but the real sight did little to downplay the horror.

Their situation was tenuous at best, and they were charging into something totally unknown. Her last thought before chasing the moose through the now-collapsed door was how angry Squidlen would be when he finds out he missed all of this.
