Chapter 110: Chapter 66: The World Beyond the Well_2

As she was walking on the scorching hot ground, a truck approached from a distance, slowly decelerating toward the parking lot.

"Hi, little girl~" A man leaned out of the big truck, looking down at the girl below.

"Walking by yourself out here?" The driver, who appeared to be in his forties, had robust arms and stubble on his face.

"Yes, just out for a walk." Hexia had to speak loudly for the other person to hear her.

"Hahaha, a walk, alright." He laughed for a while, finding the little girl amusing.

"This is for you." He threw down a pale yellow straw hat.

Catching the roughly edged, somewhat prickly straw hat, Hexia didn't have time to say anything before the big truck continued on, slowly entering the parking lot.

The automatic loading and unloading crane arms moved, lifting the container from behind the truck, then shifted it onto the freight elevator tracks to the side; soon, everything inside the container would be delivered underground, and the driver's task would be done.

Feeling the straw hat, Hexia placed it on her head and walked toward the parking lot, soon seeing the uncle emerge with two bottles of chilled mineral water in his hands.

"Want a bottle?"

He tossed one to her, and Hexia fumbled to catch it, not because she was slow but because she had never encountered such a situation before.

It was very ordinary mineral water, probably the most basic T7-grade emergency beverage, useful for nothing but hydration, yet extremely cheap, and even capable of being produced automatically with personally purchased small machinery.

Moving closer, Hexia could see the uncle's ruddy face and abundant body hair; he was wearing a work uniform with some stains and grease, and there was still a lingering scent of sweat.

"Why don't you come and sit in the parking lot's rest area? It's not as hot there, and it's safer."

"Alright." Hexia had actually never been to this parking lot before and was somewhat curious.

"You must be a child born in Payin City," the uncle casually asked while walking.

"Me? Back then, I got into fights over a girl I liked." He grinned broadly and laughed.

"Unfortunately, even though I won the fight, the girl I liked still didn't end up with me."

"Did she fall for the guy you fought with?"

"No, it was another guy she had just met. Okay, that guy was indeed quite handsome, I have to admit."

"I was so sad at the time, I cried on my friends' shoulders and even swore I'd wait ten years for her to change her mind."

"As it turned out, I can't even remember what she looks like now. I vaguely remember she liked to wear white dresses, maybe it was the view of her back in that summer that stole my soul." The uncle looked into the distance and took another big gulp of mineral water.

"People are like that, things that seem so important at the time eventually fade away."

"Whew, I won't babble with you young lady any longer, I need to go find a place to sleep now." He squeezed the water bottle flat and tossed it into the nearby trash can, then turned and entered the rest area behind him.

"I saw you walking alone just now and thought you were troubled about something, but after chatting for a bit, there's nothing at all, really." He shook his head.

"You better get back, the sun is harsh outside, and I'm sleepy." He waved at Hexia with his back to her, then shuffled his loose steps into a separate small compartment, ready to take a good nap.

"Uh, thanks for your kindness, Uncle." Although Hexia felt like laughing, she also felt a bit warm inside.

She had intended to return his cap to him, but since he had gone to sleep, she had to let it be.

Turning away from this parking lot, she continued to make her rounds near Skylight and then finally walked towards the steel stairs with a bit more spirit.

Although she didn't see any special scenery today, her mood seemed to have improved a lot.

Just like a frog that grew up in a well, thinking that everything in the well was all it had, with people it liked, with things it hated and saddened by, happy for it, weeping for it. But as time passed, when the day came that it ventured out to faraway places, it would slowly realize that this life within the well was just a tiny segment of its life, and that there was a long road ahead, with countless unknown sceneries and endless horizons waiting.
